What is Cloud Computing?

Microsoft Azure describes cloud computing as such: “the delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.”

The non-tangible cloud was released in 2006 and cloud computing is only growing. In a study conducted in 2018, 77% of organizations surveyed reported using at least one cloud service for their business. In 2019, that number has increased to a whopping 94%. Businesses aren’t just using one platform though: there has been a large movement for organizations to employ a multi-cloud strategy, which includes a mix of public clouds and private clouds.

What is a Cloud Architect?

A Cloud Architect is a high-level cloud computing expert. Business savvy with a strong technical background, the Cloud Architect collaborates with businesses/decision-makers to understand their needs and to complete projects and develop solutions in their cloud(s) to optimize processes. The Cloud Architect is also responsible for implementing the cloud platform(s) as needed and increasing adoption among users.

How to Become a Cloud Architect

Since cloud architects must have strong technical skills, having an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree in Computer Science/Information Technology is practically a must for cloud architects. Cloud architects are expected to have experience in operating systems, networking operating systems, programming languages, and security tools.

If you already have a background in technology, the next move is to get certified. The three most beneficial platforms to get certifications in, which offer free training classes, are:

  1. Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  2. Microsoft Azure
  3. Google Cloud
