As with many things in 2020, our unemployment rate is seeing unprecedented numbers. If you happen to find yourself in the large group of unemployed job seekers, this post is for you. Contemporary Staffing gathered some of their best tips for keeping your skills sharp during unemployment and showing prospective employers that you are staying busy.
Master a New Skill
Think about the type of job you are trying to get and then make a list of all the skills, software, and experiences that the ideal candidate would have. Pick one of those bullet points and go after it! There are tons of online resources that offer step by step instructions and class-like teaching environments to learn. Some top tier examples include LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, or even Youtube!
“When you have mastered the skills, add it to your resume to make yourself an even better candidate for the role.” Says Alyssa Mastrangelo, CSS Recruiting Director.
Volunteer
Prospective employers will love to see how you spent your time giving back to your community – bonus points if you were able to bulk up your professional skills in the process. For example, an accountant could dedicate time each week to helping a non-profit prepare to tax season or a sales professional can volunteer to reach out to donors.
Consider Temporary Roles
Start by connecting with a CSS recruiter – keep an open mind and broaden the range of positions you might be willing to accept. Temporary roles are a great opportunity to impress a potential employer, which could lead to a bigger, more permanent role. If the contract ends, you can add the role to your resume, show that you kept busy, and brought in some money in the time being!
The Bottom Line
Unemployment, especially now, can be tricky. Use these tips and tricks to get creative and open your mind to all the possibilities – you never know where your next opportunity is hiding! Stay tuned for Day 4.
