What is a System Administrator?

A System Administrator, often called a sysadmin, is responsible for overseeing, configuring, and updating an organization’s hardware and software, and, depending on the company, their servers and network as well. Sysadmins are also responsible for installing applications and software and managing user accounts, which requires a good deal of hands-on work. Not only are Systems Administrators in charge of handling an organization’s systems, but they are also responsible for ensuring data security, making this a crucial position that requires the most dependable tech professionals.

How to Become a System Administrator

As with most tech positions, higher education (an associate, bachelor’s, or even master’s degree) in computer science or a related field can lay the necessary groundwork for a fulfilling career as a System Administrator, but it can be substituted for equivalent experience.

Getting related certifications can be necessary or simply helpful when looking for a System Administrator position. Depending on what system a company uses, getting a sysadmin certification in Linux (and RedHat) or Microsoft can make or break your job search. CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+ are also popular certifications that employers may look for.

“System Administrators are ideal for your internal employees if they are in-house or act like they are a true extension of the business.  Technology needs to run smoothly so that everyone can get their jobs done right the first time!” says Sharon Tsao, CMO of Contemporary Staffing Solutions.
