Information technology is a field that is constantly growing, and right now, the demand for skilled workers is higher than the supply. For companies, this means that competition is fierce. It’s difficult to hire great people and to keep them on your staff. You need a strategy for how to build your IT department. If you don’t have one, here are some ideas to get you started:
Consider your salaries.
If you haven’t yet, research your local competition, or the market more generally, to see if the salaries you’re offering are in line with current trends. If possible, consider raising your salaries. But what if you can’t afford to do that? Well, if great talent is out of your reach, consider hiring good talent instead. Investing in good talent by nurturing their career growth is the next best thing to hiring an IT superstar.
Toot your own horn.
People want to work for a company that is using technology in an interesting way, or using it to accomplish good or important things. Is your company in healthcare? Job candidates exist that are inspired by that, so make it known! Even if your company is in banking, what is your company mission? Why would someone enjoy working for you? Think about your draws, and use this to attract potential candidates.
Evaluate your candidates.
There’s another aspect to the hiring process in the IT department: technical assessments. Listing a programming language on a resume doesn’t tell you much about that candidate’s proficiency. Make sure you offer a test, or ask to see a sample of their code. (You don’t have to evaluate this, of course, just hand it over to your current IT team!) This protects you from hiring someone who thinks they’re more talented than they actually are.
