Every year, on March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day.
International Women’s Day is a longstanding, global holiday first celebrated over a century ago in 1911 (though some countries/organizations had recognized it earlier).
The holiday was recognized by the United Nations in 1975, and, in 1977, International Women’s Day also became known as the United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and Internal Peace.
In the words of the official International Women’s Day website, the day is for “celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.”
Every year the holiday has a theme and this year that theme is #EachforEqual , which takes an economic approach to gender disparity. Each local community and organization can choose to celebrate this day in numerous ways for various causes, often hosting events or contributing to charities, while all under the umbrella of women’s rights.
We as a nation and as a planet have come far in promoting the equality and achievements of women and that is something to celebrate—however, the fight is not over and we still have a long way to go.
